Reading YMCA Rapids maintained their 100% record with a 5-2 win over Winnersh Rangers despite being well below par.
Rangers actually opened the scoring when a shot deflected off the back of another player before looping over keeper Rob Taylor. YM soon got back on level terms though when teenage striker Rob Maslen met a Steve Woodrow cross on the half-volley to fire home.
A mistake in the Winnersh defence then allowed top scorer Dave Morrison to get his 1st of the day. Woodrow hit a post before Maslen notched his 2nd when he raced on to a long kick by Taylor before expertly lobbing the keeper. YM club captain Sidwell then went close with a spectacular overhead kick that shaved the outside of the post. Even though it was a poor performance YM still had enough quality to create a host of chances.
YM were struggling to find any rhthym on a difficult surface but made it 4-1 early in the 2nd half when Morrison headed home a Woodrow corner. Sidwell then flashed one just wide after good hold up play from Morrison. Rangers then enjoyed their best spell of the match and earned a penalty after defender Mark Isley brought down the lively Ranger's striker. With the penalty despatched there was a glimmer of hope for the home side but that was snuffed out when Morrison completed his hat-trick from the spot after a handball.
Rapids boss Paul O'Boyle said "This was the poorest we've played this season and too many players didn't look interested today. I always felt we had another 2 or 3 gears to go into if we needed to but I'd like us to really be ripping these teams apart."
The Rapids will have to raise their game next week in the top of the table clash with Turnpike Sports.
