Reading YMCA bounced back from a midweek defeat at Sandhurst Devels with a 5-0 demolition job on Berks County Sports - their biggest ever win over Sports.
Drew Tipper was YM's star man with a hat-trick including 1 goal which will be a early contender for goal of the season whilst Sam Jennings also bagged a brace.
YM were on their game right from the off and were camped in the Sports half for most of the opening session. The chances soon began to flow with striker Martin Abery enjoying the first opportunity to open his account when he was clean through on goal only for a heavy touch allowing keeper Dave Osbourne to smother his shot. Abery then turned provider when his stabbed cross was met in the air by Jennings who headed over from close range.
Soon after Jennings was left 1-on-1 with Osbourne but the keeper was having an outstanding match and managed to scoop the ball from the feet of Jennings as he tried to round him.
The inevitable goal finally came on 25 minutes when a corner fell to Jennings on the edge of the box and his left foot volley crept in at the far post. Tipper then opened his account on the half hour with the goal of the game. He chased an overhit cross towards the edge of the area and, with his back to goal, flicked the ball over the covering defender before swivelling around and looping a first time side foot volley into the top corner with Osbourne stranded.
Midfielder Jason Wagner then hit a superb 25-yard shot that looked destined for the top corner only for Osbourne to make an acrobatic fingertip save. But the Young Men killed off Sports hopes just before the break when Johnny Adey outpaced the Sports left back to square for Tipper to tap in.
It really had been all one-way traffic in the 1st half and it was going to take a big effort from Sports to put the brakes on a rampant YM side.
To their credit Sports were alot stronger after the break but could not find any penetration against a disciplined YM rearguard. After a scrappy opening 15 minutes, YM made it 4 when good work by substitute Rob Lee allowed Tipper to tap in a simple goal for his hat-trick.
Sports then enjoyed a good 20 minute spell where the had the best of possession and territory but were largely impotent in attack and it was left to Jennings to round off the scoring in the last minute when he turned neatly on the edge of the box before hitting a low shot into the bottom corner.
YM boss Mark Lemm said "We were poor against Sandhurst in midweek so we needed a big performance today and the lads delivered it. Sports were missing a few today and games against them tend to be wars of attrition but we dominated and 5-0 didn't flatter us."
