FC Leisure 0 Reading YMCA 10
Martin Abery

Reading YMCA travelled to High Wycombe for their first ever match in the Maidenhead Norfolkians Cup and they were far to strong for struggling Wycombe Senior Division side FC Leisure.

YM have entered the Norfolkians Cup after being excluded from this year's Reading Senior Cup after an incident at the Reading Jubilee Cup Final last season when YM's Rapids side lost to Newbury Res.  Rapids manager Paul O'Boyle threw his medal into the woods after the defeat and, after a complaint from a rival side, the cup committee chose to exclude both the Rapids and the 1st team from this year's competition.

And the Reading Senior Division side made light work of their opponents with a 10-0 win - their first double figure victory since February 2000.

After a lethargic start, Martin Abery opened the scoring after a neat pass from strike partner Sam Jennings and then Jennings made it 2 after heading in a Jules Baker cross.  Jennings was again the provider when he squared the ball for Johnny Adey to lob over the stranded keeper before Abery rounded off the 1st half scoring when he slammed home Adey's flighted pass.

FC Leisure tried to get back into the game but they were slowly tiring and although YM added 6 more goals in could have been 12 as the looked likely to score in every attack.  Ben Green scored his 1st goal for the club when he diverted a mis-hit Jason Wagner effort and then Adam Cayzer made it 7 when he powered home a Drew Tipper cross.

Player manager Mark Lemm had been stuck on 98 YM goals since November 2007 and, sensing an opportunity to finally reach his century, he introduced himself into the game with 35 minutes to go.  And Lemm made it 99 with almost his 1st touch when he converted an Abery pull back. Jennings notched his 2nd shortly afterwards but all attention was on Lemm and whether he would reach 3 figures.

Then with 10 minutes remaining, Lemm chased on to an overhit pass and charged the keeper's kick down and, with the ball spiralling into the air, Lemm sprinted on to beat the keeper to the ball before heading into the empty net to spark wild celebrations.

Abery secured his hat-trick after a quick 1-2 with Baker but it was Lemm who was carried off the pitch shoulder high after becoming only the 4th player in YM's history to reach the magical ton.

Lemm said "Today was all about me.  The game was 7-0 when I came on and still in the balance so to notch 2, win us the game and reach the ton was a dream come true. I had thought I would retire after reaching the century but after reflecting I'm now hungry to get to 150 and at a scoring rate of 1 every other season I've got every chance.

We did the job today and tried to enjoy it as you don't get games like this very often.  It will be back to business for us next week with a tough cup game so we're now focussing on that."

READING YMCA: HODGETTS, CAYZER, GREEN, FITZPATRICK (replaced by LEMM 55mins), WAGNER, ADEY (replaced by NEWMAN 55mins), EDMUNDS, BAKER, D TIPPER, ABERY, JENNINGS SUBSNEWMAN, LEMM.

Linear Utd 2 Reading YMCA Rapids 5
Jammer

After a successful cup tie the rapids turned their attentions back to the league with a trip to the theatre of dreams "palmer park" the home of Linear Utd. An early clash in the first 2 minutes with YM hitman Luke kassonde saw the linear goalie off the pitch with a shiner for his troubles. The rapids got off to a bright opening 10 minutes and took the lead after a Tim Morrison through ball played in James Atkinson who ran onto it and lobbed the oncoming keeper to open the scoring. The home side responded immediately with a stunning 25 yard strike that left Rob Taylor with no chance and the rapids stunned. The goal clearly disrupted Rapids game and looked vulnerable on the break, and it wa only a matter of time before another breakaway saw Linear take the lead with a well taken counter attack. Controversially, with 10 seconds remaining Linear had a corner which was cleared by the YM defence only for it to be volleyed into the net. Linear's celebrations were cruelly cut short by the fact that the ref blew his whistle for half time before the ball crossed the line - much to YM's relief.

YM boss, Paul O Boyle, had some stern words for the Rapids which were mainly down the performance but the supremo later admitted his wife is expecting and that had led to a turbo charged team 'rant!'

Rapids came out far more determined and a tactical switch to play three at the back with the versatile Cornell playing in midfield saw Rapids dominate proceedings. Atkinson was looking lively and it was his maurading run that broke the offside trap and the hot shot calmly slotted passed the stand in goalie to level the scores. After 70 minutes Paul Towner and Alan Ilsley were introduced and it was the twinkle toed Towner who made an immediate impact spraying the ball around as though he had not been away. With ilsey holding the ball up well YM we dominating possession and began to stamp their authority on the game. Lewis Evans was the man to put YM ahead, though he is did his very best to miss from just a couple of yards as his headed crept over the line and stopped int he net for YM's 3rd. Full of confidence, Andy Bullett played a one two on the edge of the box and put the game to bed with a nice finish. Atkinson then put the icing on the cake and wrapped the game up with a headed goal to bag his first YM hatrick.

Rapids boss O Boyle said: 'It was a poor performance from us today however it is a sign of a good team to play poorly and still get a good result. We move on now to next weeks top of the table clash against Wokingham and Emmbrook full of confidence'
