Reading YMCA 2 Ascot Utd Res 0

Reading YMCA eased into the 2nd round of the Berks & Bucks Cup after 2-0 win over Hellenic reserve side Ascot Utd Res.

With Tristam Dennis and Chris Farrelly absent and Sam Jennings joining the club's ever increasing injury list, YM manager Mark Lemm was again forced to shuffle his pack with Ben Green and Johnny Adey returning to the side and David Payne making his full debut after a goalscoring cameo the previous week.

YM started the game well and immediately looked considerably more organised and cohesive then they had done the previous week. The midfield trio of Drew Tipper, Jamie Froude and Payne were working well together whilst the defence pounced on any balls into the Ascot forward players.  But despite some excellent football, YM were guilty of forcing play in the final 3rd in the face of a disciplined Ascot rearguard, and there were few clear cut opportunities to speak of.

Ascot played with one up top and were largely redundant as an attacking force with much of the play in the Ascot half.

The 2nd half continued in a similar fashion with YM controlling the game but chances were now beginning to flow with the Ascot keeper forced to make a couple of superb stops.  The crucial goal came on the hour when Chris Lemm ran half the length of the pitch to the opposition penalty box where he latched on to a pass to fire a sweet strike into the top corner.

This was the cue for Ascot's best spell of the match and for 10 minutes they were camped in the YM half and forced a number of corners.  The battling Yellamen never quite managed to create an opportunity to equalise and play soon switch back to YM who again began to fashion chances at regular intervals.  The 2nd goal game courtesy of a crisp Payne strike and YM saw the game out with few scares.
