Mortimer 0 Reading YMCA 6
Froudy

Reading YMCA made it 3 league wins in 3 in 2011 scoring 13 goals with only 1 conceded after an emphatic win over a depleted Mortimer side.

The usually splendid Mortimer pitch was very sticky and slippery after overnight rain and this led to some cautious play from both sides in the opening period. YM started poorly with little pace or energy about their game and Mortimer had the best of the opening exchanges going close with a header over the bar in first five minutes.

However it was YM who opened the scoring against the run of play when a good counter attack found Steve Daly with an opportunity to shoot. The resulting shot was blocked but took a deflection off a Mortimer defender to take it over the keeper and into the top corner.
YM were still not playing well however and were fortunate that a headed goal from a Mortimer striker was ruled out for offside. Despite YM’S less than impressive display chances were coming at regular intervals with Steve Daly and Jamie Froude in particular providing the impetus down the YM flanks. Afer a sustained period of YM pressure, a Mortimer defender went to clear the ball but Daly sneaked in from behind and toe poked the ball away but the Mortimer defender could not adjust in time and cleaned out Daly gifting YM a clearpenalty. YM’S in-form Sam Jennings stepped up and duly dispatched the spot kick into the bottom left corner.

It was more than YM deserved by this stage and they began to assert themselves for the remainder of the half. There was some good intricate football between YM’S midfield of Adam Cayzer, Chris Lemm & Drew Tipper who were linking up well with the wide men. Mark Lemm, Scott Allen & Jamie Clough were as reliable as ever at the back proving to be a fine bedrock for YM’S attacking play and were dominant in the air. Therefore it came as no surprise that when YM’S meatbags ambled forward for a free kick in a dangerous position it resulted in a headed goal. A nicelyjudged delivery from Martin Abery found Allen at the far post and he was able to rise above his marker and power in a header, which despite being cleared by a Mortimer defender, had already bustled its way over the line .Half time saw YM reflecting on a satisfying scoreline but a less than satisfying performance.

YM started the second half looking to up the tempo and take the game to Mortimer which they did to great affect. Froude was even more prominent in the second half than he had been in the first and it was Froude that delivered a pin point cross for Cayzer to crush home after out leaping his marker for a rare headed goal. Daly next got in on the act when he coolly brought down the ball on his chest and despite heavy pressure he was able to drive home a fierce low shot from 12 yards. The Young Men had numerous chances to build a cricket score but Tipper (twice), Daly and Cayzer could not dispatch fine chances. Also a marauding run from Froude could have ended with the goal of the season but he
could not get his shot off. However Froude continued to contribute heavily in YM’S best attacking moves and he delivered another fine cross which just beat the outstretched leg of Chris Lemm.

The late introduction of YM’s Jason Wagner further emphasized YM’s dominance with Wagner spraying passes around at will. A cross from Wagner on the right found Cayzer in acres of space at the far post and he sent his second header into the back of the net to make it six.
