Reading YMCA 1 South Reading 3
Jonny Adey

Reading YMCA crashed out of the Berks & Bucks cup after an insipid display against fellow Senior Division side South Reading.

YM were clearly not focussed on the task at hand and South Reading took full advantage as they flew out of the traps and created a couple of good chances before deservedly opening the scoring.  Skipper Danny Fitzpatrick then had to be replaced after aggravating a groin strain with manager Mark Lemm having to replace him and within 15 minutes YM had conceeded 2 more goals to effectively finish the game as a contest after half an hour.

Johnny Adey did pull a goal back and Sam Jennings then hit a post but there were rare excursions with South Reading dominating proceedings.

YM did muster a response at the start of the 2nd half and the game evened up somewhat although South Reading looked considerably more threatening on their attacks and only the brilliance of Chris Rackley kept the score down.  In the last 20 minutes South Reading got back on top with the game stretched but, despite some inventive attacking play, could not add to their tally.

Maidenhead Magpies 0 Reading YMCA Rapids 7
Sidders

YM Rapids bounced back from a couple of poor results with a comprehensive win over Maidenhead Magpies in the Berks and Bucks cup. Manager Mark Ilsley had to shuffle his pack once again with fellow manager Steve Woodrow among the absentees.

On a small bumpy pitch it was obvious the game wasnt going to be too much of a spectacle but YM started well with the ever lively Dave Simmonds and Dan Sutton linking up well. The home side looked a touch shaky at the back but their forward pair had some pace and got in behind YM after a Sidwell free kick clattered in to the wall and magpies broke quickly with the ball flashing across the YM goal with no one to tap in. YM took a fortuitous lead on 10 mins when Sidwell lashed a left foot clearance from inside his own box. There wasnt a YM player in sight but a magpies defender headed past his own keeper to make it 1-0. YM now looked solid with Jamie Clough and Mark Ilsley in fine form. Chris Leach and the rapid Mandeep Nangla were causing all sorts of problems down the YM right and it came as no surprise as the latter crossed for Alan Ilsley to net his first of the day with a far post finish. Nangla made it 3 with his first headed goal of all time and YM grabbed the 4th in fine style as Alan Ilsley neeted his 2nd of the match. Sidwell was at the heart of YM's attacking with some dangerous set pieces as Jamie Clough and Mark Ilsley both went close.

The second period started as expected with YM a touch slack in cruise mode and Magpies with nothing to lose. Some poor passing and gung-ho attacking meant the home side went for it and had the ball in the net, only to be adjudged offside, correctly so. A few more attacks came but a lack of quality meant YM stayed in control and added a 5th as Alan Ilsley grabbed his hat trick. The introduction of Mike Holloway meant Sidwell pushed further forward and the YM stalwart was allowed space to play in Simmonds and Sutton to make it 5 and 6. The final goal of the game came in unfortunate fashion as Hayden Brown broke down the left and tore in to the box only for a magpies player to cynically bring him down causing a major stoppage and injury worry for the YM man. His left ankle had been caught in the turf but appeared after the game as though no long term damage had been done. Sidwell smashed in the resulting penalty to cap a fine display for YM.
