Match Report Hop Leaf 0 YM Rapids 11
Dave Morrison

Dave Morrison became the single season record YM goal scorer on Monday night when the Rapids eased to an 11-0 over Hop Leaf at Palmer Park. Morrison who started life as a winger has been a revelation for YM’s second string this season and could even afford 4 weeks out before hitting the treble that secured his place in YM history.

On a bumpy pitch and less than ideal conditions it was Mark Lemm who opened the scoring as a Steve Woodrow corner found the big YM man and he fired in a crisp half volley. Woodrow was proving a handful down the left and it was his centre that was turned in to his own net by a hapless Hop Leaf defender to make it 2. Rob Maslen was enjoying another fine game in a YM shirt and his cut back was dummied by Lemm for Dean Williams to slot home his first goal in the new boots. Maslen then got on the score sheet when Paul Towner rose above the entire home defence to power a header which the keeper could only parry and the YM startlet finished with aplomb.

The second half continued in the same vein and Morrison got the first of his 3, slotting home after Darren Cornell had cut the ball back for the hotshot. Morrison then grabbed his brace with a solo effort after twisting and turning in the box and lashing the ball home from 12 yards. The YM hitman then turned provider for Maslen to grab his second with a cool finish, and the tables turned for Morrison to break the record. More top work from Maslen down the right saw his centre powered home for the hat trick and record which sparked wild celebrations from first team Manager Mark Lemm. With the Rapids running riot it was reserve boss Paul O Boyle who rolled back the years unloaded a volley after a ‘premiership like’ first touch from a Chris Leach cross. Woodrow probably grabbed the goal of the game with an unstoppable bullet from the tightest of angles, but it was Darren Cornell who unleashed a volley from the edge of the box to grab his first goal for the club.

Rapids Boss was quoted saying ‘We did a thoroughly professional job today in difficult conditions. Praise must be heaped on Dave Morrison breaking the record set by Julian Keetch – anyone who can score goals like the YM legend must be pretty good!’
