Padbury Utd 2 Reading YMCA 3
Drew Tipper

A superb rearguard action from the Young Men saw them edge out Berks & Bucks cup favourites Padbury Utd 3-2.

After several players were delayed on the 90 minute journey to Buckingham, YM had no warm up to speak of and flew straight into the eye of the storm with Padbury pounding the YM goal from the 1st minute.  Totally against the run of play YM took the lead when a superb ball from Drew Tipper found Leon Mannion in space and the striker outpaced the Padbury defence to open the scoring.

Padbury continued to dominate and got a deserved equalizer when a striker tapped in after 2 shots were stopped on the line.  The villagers then took the lead in controversial fashion when player manager Mark Lemm was adjudged to have pushed the Padbury skipper from a long throw.  Dom Lawless duly dispatched the penalty.

YM managed to force a bit of play in the Padbury half and were looking incisive in their rare attacks and it was the dangerous Mannion who again scored when he tapped home another Tipper pass.  But Padbury were creating chance after chance and only luck and some heroic defending denied them further success.

YM were camped in their own half for virtually the whole of the second period but in contrast to the 1st half Padbury were now creating very little and were running out of ideas.  However, YM could not mount any significant attacks of their own to exploit Padbury's frustration.

But in a rare attack, Tipper released Sam Jennings and after a powerful run he slammed home a left foot shot. This made for a tense final 15 minutes as YM hung on but in fact it was YM who should have extended the lead when on 2 occasions the Padbury keeper was caught upfield but YM could not take advantage.

Finally the referee blew his whistle to hand YM one of their best wins in recent years against a Padbury side who could play 1 level if not 2 levels higher than they currently reside.
